In all groups involving children and adolescents, each prospective member will be evaluated and placed in an age-appropriate therapy group. Please note that when a group is for "children," the age range is 6-9 or 10-13; for "adolescents," it is 14-18.

CHILDREN'S SOCIALIZATION GROUPS

Children's Socialization Group
For Children (Ages 6 to 9)
This group is designed to help promote the expression of feelings, enhance coping skills with such issues as disappointment, frustration, anger, family changes, anxiety, etc. In addition participation will help children of this age group increase self-esteem, and through group cohesion, cooperation, and team work, to improve their social and problem solving skills.

The group format is structured to include therapeutic activities and free play. The use of specialized activities will help members work on individual and cooperative goals.

Preteen Socialization Group
For Children (Ages 10 to 13)
We have designed this group to enhance the self-esteem of pre-teens who belong to this age group. As the group progresses, the leader will assist these pre-teens in identifying and expressing difficult feelings as they cope with daily life stressors and situations. Some of these might be disappointment, frustration, anger, family changes, anxiety - as well as a variety of problems that arise in the daily life of pre-teens.

Group members will develop their social skills through social awareness as they become more aware of personal responsibility and respect for the rights of others; problem solving, mutual aid, and team work. Structured discussions and activities as well as music and other creative mediums will be utilized to facilitate group discussion and mutual support.

Adolescent Self-Discovery Group
For Adolescents (Ages 14 to 18)
This group will help members identify, express, and cope with complex emotions that go along with adolescence. Members will work to identify core issues -- losses, family changes, peer conflicts, anxiety, etc. - as they learn to deal with age-related challenges while learning healthier self-talk and coping skills.

Through mutual helping and healing, this group can offer adolescents understanding and support to enhance their sense of community and a sense of control over their lives.

Susan Ciardiello, LCSW - Preteen & Adolescent Groups

Susan Ciardiello is a licenced clinical social worker pursuing her doctoral degree in social work at the Yeshiva University Wurzweiler School of Social Work. She holds a Masters of Science in Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Maryland.

Ms. Ciardiello's area of expertise is social group work with children and adolescents. She is a published author whose writings include a book ACTivities for Group Work with School Age Children as well as a chapter in a book on group work with adolescents.

She is an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of the International Professional Organization and The Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups. Currently working as a clinical social worker at the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Community Counseling Center. Sue works with adolescents, young adults, families, and couples individually and in groups.

Marnie J. Cohen, LMSW - Children Socialization Groups

Marnie J. Cohen is a Licensed Social Worker. She received her Masters in Social Work from Hunter College, School of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Education from Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire.

Marnie's area of expertise is working with young children and families using play therapy. In addition, Marnie is trained in and practices Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy with children. Marnie also has a private psychotherapy practice in Hartsdale in which she conducts individual, family, and group psychotherapy. She is currently running divorce and loss groups with children as part of this practice.

Marnie has worked extensively in non-for-profit agency settings as a psychotherapist. Part of this work has been developing attachment groups for parents and their children in the shelter system, developing a psychoeducational program for young adults, working with children in a therapeutic nursery as well as in intensive therapeutic groups, and working collaboratively with school systems and artists in aiding children who were affected by the events from September 11, 2001. Marnie is a member of the Association for Play Therapy and the National Association of Social Workers.

Living with a Disabled Family Member
For Children & Adolescents
Two separate groups, one for each age level, will talk over age-appropriate issues that arise for members with an ill or disabled parent, sibling, or grandparent. The group will discuss the impact of the disability on the group member's life and help each find a way to get their emotional needs met. Members will share feelings about disappointments and other emotions that arise in this difficult situation.

SEPARATION & DIVORCE

Dealing with Divorce
For Children & Adolescents
Two separate groups, one for each age level will deal with anxiety, disappointment, loyalty issues and stress that may be involved in making the transitions that arise when there's a divorce in the family. Young people will especially focus on how to renegotiate important relations and the best ways to deal with family and friends.

Separation & Divorce Group
For Adults
This group offers a venue for men and women in this category to talk over issues such as how to deal your ex, handling parenting concerns (if pertinent), loneliness, stress, depression, mourning, rebuilding self-esteem, disappointment, dealing with family & friends, and eventually, the possibility of dating again.

BEREAVEMENT

Bereavement Group
For Children & Adolescents
These two groups are designed to help children and adolescents who are suffering from loss of a parent, sibling, grandparent(s) or pet. Members receive peer support and learn strategies for effective coping in a place where they can openly express their feelings.

One group is for children and another for adolescents. Age appropriate issues will be discussed.

Bereavement Group
For Adults
This group is designed to sustain men and women who are suffering from loss of a parent, spouse/partner, sibling or child. The group offers Interpersonal support, psychological insight and effective coping strategies to help members deal with natural and complicated mourning. In addition, depression, loneliness, and relationships with family and friends will be addressed.

MANAGING ANXIETY

Managing Anxiety Group
For Adolescents
Some adolescents experience a broad spectrum of anxious feelings, from general anxiety to the more extreme (including those with OCD, phobias, etc.). For those young people, the group will discuss challenges in dealing with their anxiety, how their relationships are inevitably impacted, and learn to better manage their anxiety using specific cognitive-behavioral modification techniques.

HEALTH & WEIGHT

Health & Wellness Group
For Adolescents
Adolescents will discuss the challenges of weight loss in their teens and how it impacts them. They will learn to develop a positive body-image and improved self-esteem, as well as, to develop realistic and comfortable weight and fitness goals. This group will help them to improve on their overall health, eating habits, and fitness goals.

Healthful Living & Weight Loss Group
For Adults
This group will help members to improve their eating habits and overall wellness regimen. They will learn to end their struggle with their eating habits (i.e., eating too fast, too much, the wrong things) and be comfortable with themselves. Also, they will learn what it takes and how to accomplish their overall health and fitness goals.

Anxiety in Social Situations Group
A Group for Young Adults Ages 18-26 & Adults)
Social phobia/anxiety affects approximately 15 million American adults. This group is designed to assist individuals who become anxious and self-conscious in everyday social situations. They may feel watched, judged, and/or embarrassed which could interfere with their work, school, participation in social events, and everyday activities. With the assistance of cognitive-behavioral treatment, group members will learn to decrease their social anxiety. Members will learn to effectively implement practical social skills in their interpersonal relationships which will help to foster more fulfilling social and professional relationships.

Choosing to Stay in a Difficult Relationship
For Adults
This group is for men and women that choose to stay in a non-abusive relationship (i.e., partnership, marriage) even though it might be difficult. People often try hard not to split up, perhaps for the sake of the children, or for family, emotional, religious, or financial reasons. The workshop will focus on reducing the stress in such situations and developing more satisfying ways to cope and even co-exist.

Career Indecision Groups for Adults
For Adults
Are you asking yourself, "Where do I go from here?" Whether your job is disappointing, has been downsized, you just can't decide whether to make a career change, or you don't know what to expect out of work, this group will help you identify your skills and teach you how to take that next step toward a satisfying career.

Life After Retirement/Empty Nest
For Adults
What is it like in your house now that you have retired or the kids have left the house? It certainly is different, and sometimes it's hard to adjust to the change. In this group you'll find out ways to develop your own special interests and to adapt to the changes so that your life is a better "fit. " You may even begin to wonder how you'll ever find the time to accomplish everything you want to do.

Advanced Recovery: Sober & Clean For a Year or Longer
For Adults
When you've been "straight" a year or more, sometimes recovery can become even harder. People have changed expectations of you - and so do you of yourself. "Beginners" in recovery are in a more acute phase -and probably get a lot more attention, too. Now, after a year or more of being clean or sober, you may feel you need a different type of support. You may need to know how to adapt to changes in your environment and your present relationships.

Procrastination Group
For Adults
If you are one of those "I was going to do it but . . . , " people, do NOT put off participating in this group. If you have a hard time motivating yourself, beginning new and necessary projects, following-trough -- or if you wait until the absolute last moment to take care of what needs doing, here's a helpful group for you.

Conjoint Marital Group
For Adults
Many couples wish to enhance their existing relationships and to learn strategies to effectively negotiate, improve communication, deepen intimacy, and accomplish overall relationship goals. This group is designed to help this happen.

Managing Depression Group
For Adults
Depression often occurs in today's society. This group is designed to help men and women who may experience any of a wide spectrum of depressed feelings, from the general to the more extreme (mood disorders, major depression, etc.). Group members will learn to better manage their depression through specific cognitive-behavioral modification techniques.

Being Single Group
For Adults
The state of "singleness" is difficult these days. It's so hard to meet someone special. This group is designed for single men & women, ages 25-45. Tired of being set up? Of meeting the wrong person? Of feeling bored, lonely, or frustrated? The group will center on personal growth, developing intimacy, and connecting with partners to develop meaningful relationships.

Anger Management Group
For Adults
Anger is a normal human emotion which can range in intensity from mild irritation to intense rage. Anger can be expressed destructively and lead to health problems, difficulties at work, interpersonal relationship issues, and ones overall quality of life. This group will help group members to identify and gain insight into their sources of anger, identify what their individual needs are, and express their anger in more socially appropriate ways.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Group
For Adults
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder affects over two million American adults. In a group setting, individuals who have persistent upsetting thoughts and those who participate in various rituals will be helped to decrease their anxiety and continued participation in these rituals. Group members will be assisted with the use of cognitive-behavioral treatment and exposure-based therapy.

Panic Attack/Disorder Group
For Adults
Panic Disorder affects approximately six million American adults. In a group setting and with the use of cognitive-behavioral treatment techniques, individuals who experience persistent anxious symptoms manifested by a pounding heart, sweatiness, dizziness, nausea, numbness, and/or fear of losing control will be helped to decrease their anxiety and related symptoms to enhance their quality of life. This group is appropriate for anyone experiencing panic attacks or has been diagnosed with panic disorder.

Support for Caregivers
For Adults
In today's world and as the "baby boomers" age, it is more likely than not that more and more of us will be cast in the role of caregiver to a loved one. This group is designed to offer support, respite and information to those who are caring for a spouse, sibling or an elderly or sick person with an illness and/or physical/cognitive limitations.

Groups for Parents Who Have Children with a Disability or Chronic Illness
For Adults
Parents who have children with a disability or chronic illness often feel isolated and have difficulty accessing appropriate community resources and assistance. They are often confronted with difficult choices, have exposure to a variety of professionals and specialists, and experience an array of emotions (e.g., confusion, powerlessness, disappointment, and/or guilt). Group members will obtain practical information and ongoing social/emotional support.
